Long Distance
Escondido Signature Moving sends piano movers Escondido families trust with the one piece nobody wants to drop. An upright rides on a padded dolly, a grand comes apart and goes on its side on a piano board, and a crew of three or four takes the steps one at a time.
Most of the weight sits low and to one side, which is why it needs a plan
Contact UsAn upright piano weighs 300 to 800 pounds and a grand 500 to 1,200, and most of that is the iron frame that holds the strings. Going down hillside steps, it wants to run away from you, a lot like walking a loaded wheelbarrow down the Daley Ranch fire road. You go slow, lean back and keep a person on the low side. Our piano crews do exactly that, about 150 times a year, with straps and a padded board, not just extra muscle.
Each one moves a little differently
The small ones, 300 to 450 pounds. Two or three movers and a four-wheel dolly, then up the loading ramp.
Full-size uprights run up to 800 pounds and are top-heavy. Padded, strapped and tipped back onto the dolly.
We unbolt the legs and the pedal box, then stand the body on its long side on the piano board, wrapped and strapped.
Same method as a baby grand, with a fourth mover and a measured path to the truck. It gets its own line on the inventory sheet, and full value protection is worth adding.
With a full house move, the piano goes on the same written estimate.
Piano moving in Escondido costs about $375 to $575 for an upright and $650 to $950 for a baby grand on a local move in 2026. A full grand runs $850 to $1,350. Each flight of steps adds $75, and a steep or long walk from the truck can add a fourth mover.
A lot of Escondido pianos live in homes with a front walk of steps, a sloped driveway or a sunken living room. We look at that path before the move, on a video call or in person, and we measure the doors. A grand on its side needs about 32 inches of clear door. If the path is steep, we lay plywood over the steps and run the piano down on a board with a strap line held from above.
Because the piano usually wins. We've seen pianos that slid off a truck ramp, crushed toes and a cracked tile floor, all from a weekend favor. Legs and keyboards are the weak points, and floors and walls take a beating too. In our opinion, the $375 for an upright is the cheapest insurance you'll buy all year.
Let the piano sit two to three weeks in the new house before you call the tuner. Moving doesn't usually knock it out of tune by itself, but a change from a coastal room to an inland one, or a sunny wall to a shaded one, does. Park it on an inside wall, clear of the AC vent.
If you're moving the whole house, we load the piano on the same truck on moving day; see long distance moving for out-of-state trips. We move a lot of pianos up to Valley Center and back down from Poway, and the steep driveways there are where the board earns its keep.
Two or three movers handle a spinet or console. A full upright takes three. Baby grands and grands take three or four, depending on the steps and the walk to the truck. The number isn't about strength alone: one person steers, one holds the low side, and the others control the straps.
Yes. Stairs are the most common reason people call us instead of moving a piano themselves. Each flight adds $75 to the price and a little time. We pad the walls and the rail, and on long or curved staircases we use a strap line from above so the piano never moves faster than the crew.
Yes, wrapped and padded in our indoor warehouse. For a long summer, a piano is better off in climate-controlled storage, which we can arrange and quote separately. Wood and felt don't like big swings in heat, and inland Escondido summers swing more than most people expect.
Usually, but wait two to three weeks before you book the tuner. The move itself rarely knocks a piano far out of tune. The new room's temperature and humidity do. Letting it settle first means you pay for one tuning instead of two, and the tuning holds longer.
Our driveway in Hidden Meadows scares delivery drivers. Ray came out, looked at the hairpin and said they'd bring the small truck and shuttle. Four loads, zero scrapes, beds made that night.
Moved my mom from the house she'd lived in for 40 years into a condo near Kit Carson Park. The crew labeled everything by her new floor plan and set up her bed and reading chair first. She was settled by dinner.
We moved our dental office over a weekend. Every crate was numbered to the new floor plan and the exam chairs were where we wanted them Monday at 8. Price was what they wrote down.
